The Department of Technical Cybernetics began its educational activities in the summer semester of the 1971/72 academic year, offering a study program in Cybernetics in Transport. Nineteen students from the 3rd year of the then Faculties of Transport Operation and Economics (PED) and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (SET) were selected to join this newly introduced program. These students continued their studies in the summer semester of their third year. The first graduates were awarded their degrees in 1974 in the field of Cybernetics in Transport.
The study program quickly gained significant popularity. After the transformation of the university from VŠD to VŠDS (University of Transport and Communications), the program name was changed to Cybernetics in Transport and Communications. In 1990, with the establishment of a new faculty – the Faculty of Management – the Department of Technical Cybernetics became part of this faculty, and a new study program titled Information and Control Systems (IRS) was introduced.
Following the restructuring of study programs into bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the implementation of the credit system, a structured system of compulsory, elective, and compulsory-elective courses was established. During the 2004 accreditation process, the IRS program was renamed to Computer Engineering, a study program that the Department of Technical Cybernetics continues to manage to this day.
Two years ago, in collaboration with the Department of Information Networks, a new study program was launched: Information and Network Technologies.
The Department of Technical Cybernetics has a long-standing tradition and excellent track record in collaboration with secondary schools and the general public. Since 2015, it has regularly organized week-long seminars and training sessions focused on practical applications in robotics, programming, and the Internet of Things.
